News articles have a few extra features compared to a regular page on the site. One difference is that you can display your articles in an automatically generated feed on the website's news page. On the start page, you can add a box where the latest news is automatically displayed.

But in order for something to appear on the news page, you first need a number of articles. As with everything else in Drupal, not everyone can create articles. Talk to your site admin if you are going to publish articles but lack the right permissions.

Create article

Go to Content -> Add content -> Article

Most settings for an article work in the same way as for a regular page, so here we go through the ones that differ.

Short lead

In contexts where the news article will be visible but where there is not much space for the lead, the lead from "short lead" can be used instead. If you leave this field empty, then Drupal automatically cuts of the text contained in Lead. Short lead must contain a maximum of 150 characters.

Add media

The main image of the article, the image that will appear along with the article in various lists, you must add under "Add media". You can specify "Local media caption" if you want a caption other than the one already associated with the image.

Published by

Here you enter the author of the text, and it does not have to be the same as the page manager.

Block quote in the body field

When you type text in the body field, you can use the tool block quote, which is extra suitable in articles.

Free text tags

Free text tags can be used to categorize the articles internally in Drupal so that you can more easily find articles that belong together in the admin interface, but they also help the search engine on the various sites within Lund University to provide more relevant search results for visitors.

Related articles

Here you can add links to other articles with a similar topic, which will appear below your article. You should add a maximum of 3 related links.

Show as main news article

Check this if you want the article to appear on the site's news page (/news). If it is not checked, the article ends up in the news archive (/news/all).

If this option is not available, then your site admin has not made it possible to make certain news articles extra visible on your site. This is done under Settings> Manage site information> Website settings (check "Enable top news").

Save as

You can save a new article as a draft, so you can check what it looks like and make more changes before you publish. When you are done with it, you save it as published.

If you have an article that has already been published, and you want to save changes that you do not want to publish yet, then you can save it as a Draft. This will create a copy of the article with your changes, and the old version will still be published. If you save as unpublished, the changes will be saved, but the article will no longer be visible to visitors.

Preview

You can use Preview to see what the article will look like, without having to publish it.

Ignore changes

You can use Ignore changes if you want to cancel the changes you have made after the last saved version of the article.

Scheduling options

You can choose the date and time for when you want your article to be published.

Basic appearance or articles with Layout mode

You can create articles in a basic way with the help of the text editor, images in the body text and any infoboxes in the right column. But you can also build your article in a slightly more advanced way using sections in layout mode. This can be useful, for example, when you work with long articles with a lot of pictures and fact boxes and want to use the article's space on the width.

Articles include the content block Carousel to choose from, which is a moving slide show with several image boxes. In articles, you can also edit sections with, among other things, a title and lead, and change the margin to other content blocks.

Image in social media

If you want to share your article on social media, it may be that the university's logo appears in the post, or maybe no picture at all. In some social medias, you can easily change the image and title directly in the channel, but in some it is completely locked. With the help of the Open Graph tags in Drupal, which you will find under Meta tags, you can control which image and title is picked up when you share an article or another web page, in social media.

There are a few different places where news articles can be displayed:

The news page

Under /news the latest news is presented, and under /news/all the news archive is presented with all the news. On the News Page guide, you can read more about these pages and the settings you can make there.
